will there ever be a version for other platforms

There have been several requests for a Linux, OS X, <enter any system/platform here> version.

Probably none of them will be developed.

However, some people have reported successfully using programs like Wine (http://www.winehq.com) to run QMP on Linux. See qmp_on_linux_wine for further information.
